The Ryder Cup is without doubt the biggest and most important team competition in the world of golf. Played every two years, the event attracts the biggest crowds in the sport and the very best players from the USA, UK and Europe. In 2014 Scotland hosted the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in the Perthshire hills, and we were privileged to be the chosen contractor for the provision of cleaning and waste management services.
The competition is played over three consecutive days, however there are three practice days that attract vast crowds, and there is a long build-up period prior to the commencement of the competition. By there very nature, large scale golf competitions involve a great deal of temporary facilities, in fact almost all of the facilities are installed for the period of the competition.
In the case of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, vast areas were converted to public catering and merchandising areas, hundreds of hospitality units were strategically placed around the course, and thousands of seats were provided on grandstands across many acres of the Perthshire countryside.
All of theses areas required to be cleaned and maintained on an ongoing basis throughout the period of the matches. Massive amounts of waste had to be removed and properly disposed of whilst the competition was being played out in front of a global audience. Cleaning and maintaining such a large area is always a challenge, especially when you have to work around thousands of fans in an unobtrusive manner.
Spectrum is delighted to have delivered the most sustainable and environmentally friendly Ryder Cup ever hosted, adhering as closely as possible to the zero waste to landfill policy put in place for the first time at a major golfing event.
These services were not just delivered on the course, Spectrum provided cleaning and waste management services for all public areas, corporate hospitality facilities, BOH operational areas, officials and technical support facilities, campsites, and temporary hotels.
Extremely large scale events like the Ryder Cup require meticulous planning, and expert implementation, only through highly detailed training is it possible to deliver in such a demanding and fast moving environment.
